They May Not Listen Now, But the Seed Is In

Sope Agbelusi · · 2 min read

Good Morning Reader,

One of the most frustrating things, both personally and professionally, is when people come to you for advice… and then do absolutely nothing with it.

You give your time.
You pour in your wisdom.
You offer clarity.

And yet, the next time you see them, they’re back again, asking the same question, facing the same issue, and still stuck in the same place.

If you’ve ever felt that tension, you’re not alone.
I’ve felt it too.

In Coaching and Life, Action is Everything

As an executive coach, I don’t give advice. I ask questions, challenge beliefs, and help leaders step into alignment.

But the same frustration can creep in when progress stalls.

Which is why I have a clause in every contract:
If you come to two sessions in a row, having taken no action, the engagement ends.

I say it plainly: I’m not in the business of wasting time, yours or mine.
Coaching only works if you work it.

But this week’s quote wasn’t born in a coaching room.

It came from my own home.

Where the Quote Really Came From

I always say that my greatest leadership lessons came from being a husband and father.

And if you’re a parent, you know exactly what I mean when I say:
You can give your best speech, pour your heart out, and get nothing but a blank stare in return.

For years, I shared values, principles, and lessons with my children, and it felt like I was speaking into a black hole.
No response. No visible change.

In the early years, it annoyed and frustrated me.
Until I realised something powerful.

Parenting is seed work.
You don’t plant and harvest in the same season.

Our job isn’t to ensure the outcome.
It’s to plant the truth with love, consistency, and intention, and trust the seed will do what seeds do.

Grow silently.

Truth Has No Expiry Date

I’ve watched my children begin to live out lessons we spoke about eight or ten years ago. I’ve heard them advise their friends using the same words I once spoke to them, words I thought had gone in one ear and out the other.

And that’s when it hit me.
Truth doesn’t expire.
It just matures quietly, waiting for readiness.

You cannot force someone to comprehend what they’re not ready to receive.
But you can still plant the seed.

And that matters more than you think.

So What Do You Do When No One Listens?

You keep showing up.
You keep sowing seeds.
You stop tying your identity to immediate results.

In leadership, relationships, and parenting, impact isn’t always instant.

Sometimes, the most powerful words you’ll ever say won’t take root until years later.

That doesn’t mean they were wasted.
It means they’re doing the quiet work of transformation beneath the surface.

This Week’s Reflection

→ Where in your life have you been planting seeds but feel discouraged by the silence?
→ What truth do you need to keep speaking, even if no one claps or responds?
→ And how might your leadership shift if you saw your role as planting for the long game, not just today?

Just because they’re not listening now doesn’t mean the message is lost.
Trust the seed.
Speak the truth.
And release the outcome.
