Are you shrinking to stay safe or stretching to grow?

Good Morning Reader

Last week, I was in New York with a cohort of 11 experienced senior leaders, part of a year-long programme I’ve been facilitating.

We’ve spent enough time together now that the masks are starting to drop. The real conversations are surfacing. And one of those hit deep.

She shared how tough things had been lately. She’d had to push back against the CEO, something she’d never done before, and it rattled her. Not because she was wrong. In fact, her stance was completely aligned with her values. But it felt uncomfortable. Unfamiliar. Unsafe.

Her role demands that she be the voice of reason, the voice of the people. But she’s more comfortable working in the shadows, leading her 100+-person team, and getting things done. She does not challenge upwards or shake things at the top.

That’s her old self: steady, capable, invisible, familiar, competent

But now her new self is trying to emerge. And she’s stifling it, even though everyone else can see it breaking through.

I asked her if there were other signs, other moments when this new version of herself was showing up.

She paused and then smiled. Her husband had recently said something about her seeming more bold and confident. He encouraged her to lean in.

Her team had mentioned it too, how they appreciated “the new her.”

Everyone sees it except her.

That’s the strange thing about growth, others often recognise it before we accept it.

Because growth rarely arrives with fanfare. It creeps in through discomfort. It whispers through a question you can’t ignore. It breaks open a moment that used to feel safe and no longer does.

Our comfort zone isn’t a place. It’s an identity. A story we told ourselves about who we needed to be to survive. To succeed. But at some point, that story starts to expire.

The leader you were is not the leader you’re becoming. And there’s no update button. Just a choice.

Will you stay loyal to the script you’ve outgrown? Or risk becoming a stranger to your past self in service of your future?

That shift is rarely loud or dramatic. It’s quiet. Subtle. It starts with a question you can’t ignore anymore. A conversation that unsettles. A moment where your values demand volume. It’s emotional. It’s mental. It’s internal before it’s external.

You start feeling like a stranger to your old patterns. But that’s the cost of growth.

You can’t become the one you’re meant to be while clinging to the habits of who you were.

That’s the tension. That’s the cost.

So ask yourself this week:

  • Where are you still operating from safety, not vision?
  • What part of you is growing louder, and are you listening?
  • Who already sees the new version of you that you’ve been resisting?

You don’t need permission to become.

But you might need to let something die first.
