Are You Leading Your Life or Just Responding to It?

Sope Agbelusi · · 2 min read

Good Morning Reader

A few days ago, I had a conversation with one of my mentees. They’ve been going through a storm. Not just a tough day, but something that left them physically, emotionally and mentally drained. And while the event itself had happened a while ago, the aftershocks were still very present. They were stuck in survival mode, responding, reacting, absorbing, and it was taking its toll.

As I listened to how they were managing everything, I asked them gently but directly:

"When are you going to shift from reactive to proactive?"

Not because I was being cold or dismissive. But because I’ve been there. And I know that if we stay in that space too long, we start giving away our power piece by piece. We begin living around our circumstances rather than through them. And when that happens, we lose sight of our voice, our agency, our authorship.

When we live in a reactive state, we’re not just responding to circumstances… we’re surrendering to them. We start to wear the identity of the storm. We let the past dictate the pace and tone of our present. And while the storm itself may not be your fault, staying in it can become your choice.

We made a simple plan together:

  • What needs to happen over the next month?
  • What has been avoided for too long?
  • How will you hold yourself accountable, and who will help you?

By the end of that call, the heaviness hadn’t vanished, but something shifted. There was more clarity, more breath, more possibility. The sky hadn’t cleared, but the fog had begun to lift.
And now I want to ask you, reading this:

Where are you stuck in reaction mode?

Maybe it’s at work, where your day starts and ends in your inbox, constantly responding to what others need while your own priorities are buried under the weight of urgency. Or maybe it's in your relationships, where you’re always adapting, appeasing, absorbing, too exhausted to even ask what you need.

You might be reacting to expectations that were never yours to carry in the first place. Or replaying a conversation, a decision, a mistake, reliving it so often that it’s shaping your present far more than it should.

You might be constantly busy, booked, productive, helpful, but no closer to what actually lights you up. No closer to what you intended to build this year. It's like being on a treadmill: motion, but no movement. Doing, but not becoming.

Reaction mode can feel like you're surviving life, not leading it. It's subtle. It often masquerades as responsibility, diligence, even care. But if you pause long enough to listen, you’ll notice the cost: your energy, your creativity, your joy, and the quiet erosion of your sense of direction.

So pause. Breathe. Ask yourself again with more honesty this time:

Where have I stopped choosing and started simply coping?

Because recognising where you’ve been reactive is the first step toward reclaiming your power. The first act of leadership is always internal.

3 Questions to Consider This Week:

  1. What area of your life feels most reactive right now?
  2. What might proactiveness look like there, even if it’s just a small shift?
  3. If you reclaimed authorship, how would your next step look different?

You are not powerless.
You are not stuck.
You are simply in a moment where you get to decide: will you keep responding… or will you start creating again?
